Hello Scott,

Recently I had an issue with a 1981 5.7 gmc carburated engine that overheated on me it was adjusted to the best of my ability used a vacuum gauge to set the idle mixture which was running good before that happened, I managed to get it running but now i am getting backfire at the carb in this situation if this was your vehicle what would be your order of diagnostics you would do to find out what would be wrong with it and how to fix it thank you so much for your time.

Seeing how old it is and that fact that it had overheated I'd want to first do a compression test to verify internal engine condition.
