Does anyone know if cat shields actually work? Which work better? Which don’t work at all?
they're more of a psychological deterrent. Determined (and stupid) thieves can still get it. Smart ones will move on. The point is to make it harder to steal than your neighbor's. But if your car is high risk then I think insurance is a better use of funds.
They work. When the originals rust away I just make replacements out of sheet metal.
@chucktobias
I think he means anti-theft shields, not heat shields. All the heat shields I've seen were aluminum anyway.
Painting the cat also helps deter theft, and rust.
@nlord I misunderstood. I thought he was talking about the converter heat shields!
@nlord why does painting the cat deter?
@kaizen the place where the thieves sell the cats won't buy them because they are marked, and possibly identifiable.. Even better is putting your name or vin on it.
@chucktobias The only reason I knew, was because I have seen people selling the shields, like a skid plate under the cat. Good for protection from road debris, and no doubt good for theft, but the ones I have seen are costly.
@nlord thanks.
