I changed my oil at 1160 miles on my new 2026 Honda Civic LX (CVT automatic). I did it because a friend recommended to me to do it early (1000-1500 miles) to flush out metal shavings from the engine during the manufacturing process. Was it ok to do so? Will it damage the engine? Will my car still be fine in the long run? I read that Honda recommends not changing the factory oil until the oil life percentage is at 15% because there are additives in the factory oil like molybdenum to help engine component break in correctly. Thanks.

Is that in your owner's manual or factory maintenance schedule? (In any event your engine is broken in by the time you reach 1000+ miles.)

you can never damage your engine with an oil change. Even if you did it on the first day. Better to get the junk out if you ask me.

I can't see the future any more than you can, but nothing you did was wrong. Have a drink it sounds like you need to relax.

I think what you're referring to is "assembly lube". It's a high quality grease they put on engine parts when it's put together. That way it doesn't start "dry" when it's first started up, and before oil reaches pressure. After that it disperses in the oil, at which point it's not really doing much. There's no special oil. You can safely stick to the manufacturer recommendations in your owner's manual, and ignore the heresay. If you want to be extra prudent then do a few short intervals. You'll be absolutely fine. It's a commuter car, not a space shuttle.
