The car starts with a hot shot because the alternator drains the battery down and it will run but the alternator light is still on and when i shut it off it will not start again?? any suggestions, thx please help Im at wits end. thx Lucille

The quality of replacement parts even for newer vehicles is abysmal these days and is worse for older ones. Aside from the issue of whether the alternator is really any good, Ford back then was using an electromechanical relay-type voltage regulator that needs to be adjusted properly for charging to work.

For a car that old it would be a very good idea to get a factory shop manual. Rockauto lists shop manuals on CD for that car for a little over $20. Paper manuals are available as well. (I used to have a 1966 Fairlane but that was nearly 50 years ago.)
