what diagnostic scan tool should I buy to read stored codes

My check engine light has been coming on and going off intermittently for the past few months. The local auto parts shop has them for loan but says they probably won't search for saved codes if the light isn't on. Any recommendations on a brand of tool to get that will read history as part of the scan? The car emissions are still under warranty and I'd like to find the issue so I can possibly get it fixed w/o spending money

Even if the light is not on, it is stored in the car computer. Find another part store and have them scan for codes or buy a scan tool and do it yourself.

I kinda figured as much. Any suggestions on a particular brand?

It depends on your budget and applications. This topic has been discussed in this forum. Search the forum for more detailed info.

See the FAQ section on scan tools as well as the "Tools" link at the top of the page.
