Check Engine Light is on, 1994 Plymouth Colt Vista SE

Good day, Sir. I just purchased my very own first car this past Monday. The car is in very good shape with 88630 as the mileage.

Unfortunately, the check engine light is on and I want to diagnose the car first to see exactly what's going on. Am I able to do so with an OBD code scanner?

I feel like this car is extremely dependable and want to ensure that it remains that way.

Thanks in advance

That car is pre-OBD2 so most of today's scan tools won't work with it. You need to follow the manufacturer's procedure for retrieving OBD1 codes. That is a rebadged Mitsubishi so I don't know whether Chrysler or Mitsubishi procedures apply.

Seeing as how you're starting out with a vehicle that's already 30 years old, good luck with that.

Well, yeah, I read the owner's manual and it says that the check engine light illuminates when there is a malfunction of an exhaust gas related component. Is that true?

If that's what the manual says, undoubtedly, though you should pull the code to see what is specifically triggering the light.
