I've got a 98 chevy k1500, 5.7 vortec. I had no problems before hand and then all of a sudden I went to start it and it will start once and then dies immediately. It will start but not turn over. I have disconnected the MAF sensor still nothing. Also I have tried priming the fuel pump and nothing. I can hear the fuel pump working but not sure it it is pumping enough prvortex. Do I get it towed to a mechanic?
That's exactly what your Passlock anti-theft system would do if it were acting up.
Does the Security light stay on or flash after the engine starts and dies?
The security light should illuminate when you turn the key and then should go out within a second or so.
Your version of Passlock is primitive. There's just a Hall Effect sensor in the ignition lock housing and a magnet on the ignition key cylinder.
A correctly cut key is put into the ignition. The ignition cylinder turns, and the magnet passes by the Hall Effect sensor. A voltage signal is sent to the passlock control module (It's in your lower dash just to the left of the ashtray), the voltage signal is then sent to the BCM and ECU for verification.
The system's purpose was to keep thieves from screwing a slide hammer into the ignition lock and "popping it out" and then using a screwdriver to turn the ignition switch.
Passlock didn't disable the starter or the fuel pump. It disabled the fuel injectors.
Also, it gave itself a couple of seconds to reconcile the signal.
So you'd get brief starts before it shutdown the fuel injectors.
There's just 4 steps to determine (99%) if it's the Passlock.
1) Does the starter crank?
2) Do you have spark?
3) Do you have fuel pressure?
4) If you spray starting fluid into the intake will the truck run (probably poorly) during a NO START?
If you answer "Yes" to all 4 it's probably the Passlock. (Like I said earlier, the dash security light should also be tipping you off).
