  • Hello! I have an -04 Chrysler neon with an automatic transmission. Driven around 160 000 miles. I can hear a annoying whine at random points and the car stops moving for a minute or two until it "clicks/clunks"  into action. The whine sounds as if the transmission isn't getting enough oil even though it's topped.Transmission filter and oil has been changed. Can it possibly be a faulty TCM or bad torque converter? Otherwise it's a good car and have run without problems till now.

My money is on the physical condition of the transmission itself, if it’s whining, but get a good mechanic to scan the transmission for codes.

Hoping it’s a cheap fix for you.

Hi, thank you for the response. We dropped the trans and it seems like the torque converter is done for. Bought a parts car and replaced the converter, seems to work good, at least for a few thousand miles. As it seems there should be some resistance in the oil pump gear but had none. Have a nice day/evening!
