Scotty, I’m from Toronto Canada. I’m thinking buying either the 2018 Honda Civic Touring or the 2018 Toyota Corolla XS. Bothe have similar low kilometres and accident free vehicles. Which would you recommend to buy. Thanks.
If both are equal I would go Toyota.
Well, you didn't mention the price of the vehicle. In the Honda Civic Touring, it has the 1.5L turbocharged 4 cylinder engine which doesn't last as long as a naturally aspirated engine equipped Corolla. For those reasons, I choose Toyota Corolla over Honda Civic.
If car prices in Canada are like it is in the United States where used car prices are very high and sometimes even more than the brand new one then I would say maybe consider buying new. But in general between civic and corolla I would go with the civic; I was in the process of making this same decision couple years ago and I just really preferred the ride of the civic and it didn't feel cramped compared to the corolla. Both are good cars so it goes down to personal preference.
Between those two I'd definitely get the Corolla
Realize that the 2018 model (E170) is NOT the current generation and has a weaker CVT than the 2019-up models (E210). Personally If I would be shopping for an 2018 model I'd get a Mazda3 (BN/NM generation - NOT BP!) if you can find one in similar condition for the same price, their SkyActive engines and on-par with Toyota's (and are just better than EarthDreams) another plus being that the SkyActive-Drive is a conventional automatic unlike the CVTs w/o launch gear that Toyota and Honda had in 2018.
On a Corolla/Honda of that generation you really want to be 100% sure that the transmission has been regularly serviced and that it doesn't whine yet (40k~60k mile intervals should be fine, but you should replace it every 20~30k miles especially in urban/sporty driving). On the 1.8L engine you want to make sure that there's no oil consumption, other than that the 1/2/3ZR-FE engine are great, the 1/2ZR-FAE are a bit weaker.
I really don't recommend getting that Honda unless it's in much better shape than the Corolla.
earth-dreams engines with these Yamaha transmissions have been absolute nightmares for some owners.
