what should i use to clean the inside of a engine. i am not a mecanic. my engine is a 1989 305 and it has 310000 kilometres. should i remove the head or keep it like it is because its running great.
I wouldn't touch it if it's running. Opening it up is just asking for trouble.
Grab yourself some intake cleaner and an old toothbrush, and clean up to the throttle body but that's it.
If you're paranoid, then pick up a boroscope and snake it into the intake manifold so you can see what the valves look like. You can also stuff it down the spark plug holes to see the pistons.
If you want to clean the inside of the motor you have to take it all apart and clean it and replace gaskets and other questionable motor parts. There is no miracle in a bottle cleaner that will clean your motor and make it brand new again if that was what you were hoping. If you want a clean motor it takes work. Gas is a good cleaning agent and so is brake cleaner, they both leave no residue. But clean with soft brush so no damage occurs to metal parts you want to clean.
