- My wife has a 2014 Ford Escape with 127,000 that makes a clicking sound from the rear axle only reversing and only while turning in reverse

Well you say when turning especially so you want to check to see if there's something wrong with a brake system and then they're making it noise when you drive it that way. If not it would be internal to the rear end and that kind of stuff can get expensive if a differential there is going bad
The noise is coming from the rear and only when turning left or right and it does it when not braking , just while backing and turning and it doesn’t do it all the time, just half the time and it does seem to be progressively getting louder.
