Clunk after rear differential yoke replacement

Hi Scotty,

2008 Chevy Silverado 2500HD 6.6 L diesel.
The rear differential was leaking from the piñon seal so I replaced it and I marked everything with a paint pen including yoke nut and threads. After I replace it my self it continued to leak. So took it to a shop and they replaced the yoke and stated the work I did was good but the yoke was worn in the spot the seal sits so they R/R the yoke and seal and performed a front differential service/ fluid change.
And now when I revived the truck I can hear a winding /Wind when accelerating and deceleration and when I shift from park to reverse to drive it’s hard and I hear a clunk I didn’t hear that noise before. What do you think the problem is? Think the yoke nut is to tight or too loose? Or something else?

They probably did not use the correct measurement shims and crush sleeve to do the job correctly.  There has to be a very specific amount of lash and a very specific amount of break away torque when the flange on the pinion gear is turned.  Sounds like they screwed up the job.  Either take it back and demand they fix it or take it to someone who actually knows what they're doing.  You cannot just tighten up the flange nut and call it good.

the output yoke on your transmission could be worn too.

When driveline components start to get sloppy like that , they tend to mess up everything they're attached to (including internal parts!)

Very true.  I'd also take close look at those u joints too.

This is what can happen if you don't maintain your u-joints (or center support etc.) on time
