Clutch on manual transmission

How do you know when to change the clutch on a manual transmission car? The obvious answer is when it doesn't shift anymore; however, I would think that this would be a safety hazard.

Usually the time to change the clutch is when it slips or when the throwout or pilot bearings start making noise.

If you can only shift into gears when the car is off, it is definitely time to change it.
