How do I get check engine codes without scan tool?

So I work at an AutoZone, and we have scan tools that can read codes that you can use for free. The employee will tell you what the codes are and should print out a sheet of paper for you that has the code(s) on it, the meaning of the code(s), depending on which ones it'll also have recommended parts to fix the problem.
