Corolla timing cover gasket leak

Hi Scotty,

I have a 2013 Corolla LE with approx 260 K. My mechanic noticed some oil seepage around the timing cover. They said it appears minor, but eventually will need replacement.  They added that they should replace the timing chain and tensioner at the same time. I haven't heard of a timing chain and tensioner replaced often. Any advice and guidance would be greatly appreciated ? By the way, car is running fine. No weird engine sounds or rattles. Typicallly close to a quart low every 1500 to 2000 miles. Thanks

If it's just seeping I would not worry too much, just keep an eye on it. The timing chain should be good for the life of the car if it has been maintained properly. They will normally start rattling if worn or the tensioner is not working properly. (Your mechanic may be thinking that if the timing cover needs to be removed at some point anyway you might as well have the chain and tensioner refreshed while in there.)

That oil consumption is not terrible but you might want to replace your PCV valve.
