What are y’all’s thoughts on current Subaru CVT transmissions?

Better than they used to be because they've got deals going with Toyota sharing technology

At least for light duty, they’re pretty good.  Recent Crosstrek, Impreza, Forester, Outback all should be fine.  I can’t recommend towing much or installing heavy off road tires, but otherwise I don’t think they’ve had more problems than average.

The Ascent is heavier and has had more problems.  Hardly anyone buys the WRX with a CVT, but I personally wouldn’t trust it (FYI, I have a 2018 WRX with the 6-speed manual).

If you are seriously considering one, search for previous threads that discuss whether (and when) to change the CVT fluid.

By most accounts they are pretty much OK if you don't tow or abuse them and ignore Subaru's insistence that the transmission is a "sealed unit" with "lifetime" fluid. Regular fluid changes will extend their life.
