Hello Scotty, my dad's 2002 Kia Sportage catalytic converter was stolen last week and the theives also cut some lines next to where the converter was at. There's 2 metal lines , which ones are they the break lines or transmission lines? Also how difficult would it be to fix myself. I have basic knowledge with car parts, or is it a better idea to hire a mechanic? Thank you
I'll get on it right now , thank you mountainmanjoe ... I uploaded the picture as my avatar for the time being but I'll jump on it.
What exactly leaked out of the cut lines?
Does the car start normally? Any fuel odours?
I suggest you visit (or have it towed) to a trusted mechanic to atleast get a full diagnosis of whatever is damaged & needs fixing. Armed with that information, you can then decide if you want to attempt to fix it yourself or have it fixed professionally.
did the rear brakes stop working?
Probably transmission cooler lines. There are also brake lines and fuel lines under there but those tend to be routed around the periphery of the car rather than near the transmission, but still they're a possibility. As @InThrustWeTrust says you need to have it towed to a mechanic to have it checked out if you don't know what to look for. Definitely DO NOT try to drive it or even start it!
Thank you everyone for the quick responses. When the theft happened there was a lot of fluid so to be safe we had it towed back home. I've been working all this week but finally off tomorrow so I'm going to check fluid levels to see what's low. We haven't turned it on in fear of damaging something and also since it'll sound like a 1980s race car lol I'm thinking also transmission cooler lines. There's a few mobile mechanics in my town so I'm going to call around to get a quote for a diagnosis. I wish I could upload a picture on here.
You can upload a picture to your favorite file-sharing site (imgur.com or whatever) and post the link here.
Just follow the lines backwards and see what they lead to. You can put a video on youtube if you're not sure.
Your photo only shows the cuts, which I already had pictured in my mind. It looks like there's pink fluid dripping out so it's probably transmission fluid.
