Can you explain exactly what a CVT transmission is and are they as good as the standard transmissions in most cars. A mechanic friend of mine said that they are really hard to rebuild or repair.

The 2014 Toyota Camry comes with a 6 speed automatic, and since 2018 come with an 8 speed automatic.
All hybrid variants come with a CVT.
Your mechanic friend is correct.
A CVT is basically an automatic transmission with 0 gears (sometime 1 launch gear) and infinite ratios.
In 99% of scenarios a CVT will not last as long as a manual transmission or even a torque converter automatic.

The 2014 non-hybrid Camry’s all had a regular 6-speed automatic transmission (by Aisin). The hybrid versions had CVT.
The 2021 non-hybrid Camry’s all have a regular 8-speed Aisin automatic transmission. The hybrid versions have a CVT.
