Diesel electric hybrid cars

Hello everyone,

question for today~ why it’s hard to find any supercharged or hybrid diesel engines on market?

It’s all about fuel efficiency, at least why there aren’t many superchargers stock on cars.

A turbo uses exhaust gases to spool up.   A super charger is spooled up by a drive belt to the engine. So the engine has to work a little harder with a super. Whereas the turbo doesn’t even touch the engine directly to spool up. Which also makes sense why you wouldn’t want a hybrid connected to a super charger, is it kinda defeats the purpose of a hybrid

My guess for why no hybrid diesels is because Diesel engines are usually heavier. Hybrids already have added weight with the battery.  Yet they want to make the car as light as possible.

electric generators produce more power the faster they rotate. Diesels like to run at low RPM. Gas is just better suited. You'll also notice they use atkinson cycle gas ICE, which is optimised for high speeds. The electric motor provides the grunt at low RPM.

supercharging diesels doesn't make much sense. I'm going to go out on a limb here ...
so again, diesels like to go slow. They need help with top end speed, which is what turbochargers are best at. Supercharger power boost comes in lower, which the diesel doesn't really need. I could be wrong though.

oh for their top end models. How nice.

Will it be able to go under water?

yes but only if you surface for air once in a while or raise your snorkel

It's nothing new, There was a Diesel Hybrid in the European market.

The Citroen DS5 launched in ~2012 should do about 70mpg combined (US mpg), but there aren't many out there and I have herd they're super complex and are prone to battery wear.

And although the car is beautiful and luxurious, it was not a sales success at all... I think Toyota's attempt at this will have a similar fate.

Hello Mr Kilmer, I was wondering what you and the others on this website think about hybrid diesel tech

Ive been seeing rumors lately that Toyota is developing a hybrid diesel powertrain for their overseas work vehicles in places like Australia. I’ve also seen some other rumors that maybe the new model Tundra may get a similar engine configuration

I assume Toyota doesn’t offer any diesels in the US because the EPA is so strict, but would a hybrid diesel work in the American market? It seems like it would get good mileage and towing / torque specs

Toyota really led the way with hybrid tech with the Prius, so it makes sense that maybe they would be the first to offer a mass produced hybrid diesel in the US. Plus it seems like the Tundra could perform more competitively with towing and work truck applications compared to Ford/dodge and others

Could you see Toyota introducing this into the US, or is this wishful thinking?

big fan of your channel and thanks for your expertise, this is a great resource for automotive knowledge

I would be interested in seeing what it could do but I don't think it might be on in the US because the EPA regulations are going to get more stricter as the years progress.

It’ll be interesting to see how they do in places like Australia. Diesels obviously have great reliability, and Toyota vehicles of course have the same reputation, but I wonder if the hybrid batteries will last

I also wonder what kind of fuel efficiency and performance numbers it will give

Some of our opinions are already expessed there:

Gasoline hybrids already cost big money. I think diesel ones would cost super high.

In the US, imho, it’s because there are more petrol pumps than diesel pumps. The US is primarily petrol for passenger cars.

4 years old video.

I wonder why they discontinued diesel engines in several models with current generation.

why don't auto manufacturers make hybrid diesel engines? diesel doesn't burn as fast as gasoline and adding a hybrid engine would make better fuel economy. so why don't they make diesel hybrid engines?

Please search before asking a new question. Thanks.
