I was thinking about buying an old Chevy Blazer or a GMC Jimmy. Nothing fancy just something to get me to work reliably. Is there anything I should keep an eye out or are there better options?

There are certainly better options. Go for the Japanese.

Availability of parts in your area & rust. Besides the usual things to be checked when buying a very old, used car.
