Does Scotty use a Dashcam? And what does he think of Dashcams?

I try them out to see if they work from various companies but I generally don't use one when I'm driving I use my eyes

Ostensibly because some of them that sit on the dashboard block the drivers view to some extent (in the eyes of some legislators that have nothing else to do but to come up with revenue sources.)  Every state is different, as with most other things, pot, guns, petty theft, etc.

It's true that some do. But then the law should forbid things that obstruct view, not single out dash cams.

They usually do, like fuzzy dice for example. Depends on what type of mood the cop is in when he sees your feathers, love beads and baby slippers hanging from your rear view mirror.

This is a major traffic code violation - PULL OVER!

I use BlackVue cameras for absolutely everything. Nearly invisible and hides behind the rear view mirror.

Excellent quality. Better clarity for video and sound than the dashcam in my younger brother's 2021 Tahoe Police Interceptor he uses on patrol.

which model do you have?

@MountainManJoe I use the DR900X-2CH. Pricey but they do a fantastic job and have a lot of really good features. Here is a link to the official site where you can buy it: https://blackvue.com/product/dr900x-2ch-plus/

it is pricey, and they don't seem to have infrared on front facing cameras

Mine do not have infrared, but the picture is clear enough to make out license plates at night. Good enough for me. I don't drive much at night anyway myself.

I was thinking more for capturing footage of potential thieves creeping around at night when the vehicle is parked. There are IR dashcams with motion activation.

It’s a good idea to have one,

Personally have tried many makes and models - I have one on all of my cars and on most cars I’ve owned.

The best one is definitely the “YI DashCam Ultra 2.7K”, it has awesome video quality, excepts big memory cards and it’s just a good product - but it is expensive and very hard to find because of the chip and camera shortages.

Since I couldn’t find a decent YI dash cam for my latest car, I decided to try the 70Mai A400 1440P.
The DashCam is a good value (mine cost me about $50) but it does take a lot of space on the windshield, the interface is too complicated and the app is buggy and requires weird permissions.

The worst unit I’ve tried was a Xiaomi 1080P DashCam, the recording quality is almost unusable, the app was unusable, it didn’t accept big memory cards, the battery has died and the mounting mechanism broke when I tried removing the camera to get some footage.

(YI, 70MAI are all Xiaomi companies but I was surprised by how much the quality varies)

I replaced it with a $25 Motorola 720p, it has only about 3 hours of backlog and it accepts only 32GB memory cards, the screen is dim, there is no app so you’ll have to use a card reader

BUT for $25 it’s decent.

Thanks for the reviews
