Dear Scotty,
Is jumping a car then taking off one of the cables from the battery an effective way to determine whether the battery or alternator needs replacing?

Just put a meter to it and check its output.

Maybe on a '65 Chevy but not on a modern car, you can damage sensitive electronics doing that.
