Deal with dealer or private?

Hi, what do you recommend in buying a 3-4 yr old vehicle. Is it better to deal with dealer and have the security of a safety inspection having done in advance and being detailed and restored, and not having to worry about issues, or to go private sale and worry about all the above? Is the $1500 to $2000 worth the peace of mind (usu. also includes a 6mo warranty?) Selection is way bigger at dealers too, of off-lease returns.

Thanks

Anymore it seems private and dealer are starting to be about the same in my opinion. Everybody wants their money and they will tell you anything to make a vehicle seem like it’s made of diamonds and gold. There’s a reality that’s just not understood anymore.

I've had dealers cover expensive repairs for me, which would have been out of pocket had it been a private sale. 90% of my vehicles have been off lots.

That's not to say I wouldn't buy privately for the right price.

Unless you know the private seller, I would avoid buying private. A lot of things hang in the balance here. A dealers rep is important. I would have a mechanic check a potential car BEFORE your buy if possible. If they won't let you do that, then run away from it, fast. Not all dealers are bad and not all Private sellers are bad. Stay away from dealers that pose as Private sellers. Do your research and homework. You need savvy for this.
