They’ve always done that for new, in-demand models, but since covid and chip shortage they carried the practice over to all models.
That said, for anything that’s not a niche product (Ford Raptor or something) or a brand new release, you should be able to find things at MSRP. In my local area, markups are going away; my local Toyota dealer is even selling Tundras and RAV4 Prime at MSRP (albeit with limited selection and/or wait list.

The only reason I would buy a Tesla is so I can avoid dealerships.
