Dealerships Sucks!

Dear Scotty,

on 8/17/2021 my fiancé and I went and purchased our perfect family vehicle. It’s a 2017 Toyota Highlander Limited AWD. We live in Michigan so that’s why we opted for the AWD. Before traveling two hours downstate we decided to go to our credit union to get approved for a loan for this vehicle. We have our credit union the VIN how many miles this vehicle has etc etc. this vehicle we purchased with 50,088 miles and it come from Cananda. So once our credit union checked everything out for the vehicle they told us that we’re approved for this vehicle and they wrote us a blank check so that if we wanted to purchase a warranty or anything like that we could add it on with our purchase.

The salesman I called and dealt with the day prior to I told him this is what we would do. He told me it wasn’t necessary because their dealership works with our credit union very often. But I wanted things to be simplified and I wanted things to go fast and easy. Once we arrived there we test drove the vehicle and we absolutely loved this vehicle and this is what we were going to purchase that day. Since a week prior we sold my fiancé’s 2016 Jeep Compass and made a profit and she needed a vehicle. (Thank god we got rid of that Jeep it just gave us headaches) so we go back inside and tell the representative that we want to purchase this vehicle. So he starts taking down our information and at first we didn’t think anything of it. Because we were also attending to our 2 month old daughter. Then we’re being asked where do we work etc etc and then we’re told his financing guy is working this out for us. My fiancé and I look at each other and start to question why aren’t we just using this check out credit union gave us. Finally we’re taken over to the person doing the financing and he has this paper work all laid out for us and he starts to tell us that our loan is through the lender we chose but they did all of this themselves so they can get their 1% kickback. I was instantly angry because we had already went through the trouble to get the blank check from our credit union. It was to save time ultimately. But instead it took us two hours. Since they were short staffed that day, would you believe it? Ultimately I’m not not upset about our purchase, we purchased GAP and a warranty from them that allows us to take our vehicle to any certified shop. But after this experience and telling them we had our check through the credit union, I can’t help but feel rubbed the wrong way. Also this dealership is the Zeigler dealership in Plainwell Michigan. Is it possible I’m angry about nothing? I’d love to hear your thoughts and opinion.

This is what dealers do for a living. They pull every trick out of the financing book. I'm sorry to hear what happened.

Well, I'll be Devil's Advocate here: you saw the paperwork, you signed on the dotted line. Nobody put a gun to your head and you knew the terms plain and clear. If you weren't happy with the deal, you shouldn't have signed the contract.

Sometimes I can get financing rates that beat my customer's credit unions. Sometimes I can't. But if you wound up paying less interest it may have been worth it.

Nobody here can tell you if you made a good deal or a bad deal. Each of us have different financial situations. All I can say is what I said before: If you weren't happy with the deal, you shouldn't have signed the contract.

Honestly it sounds like you are happy with it in the end and it worked out for you, so I'd stop thinking about decisions that have already been made and move on.

That's my opinion, which you can take or leave of course. But if I could impart two small pieces of advice:

1. Contracts - Read them, understand them, agree to the terms before you sign them.

2. Life - Life is very short my friend. Please do not spend your extremely valuable time worrying over trivial decisions.

I hope you enjoy your new vehicle and stay safe out there on the roads.

F&I (Finance and Insurance) is where stealerships make a huge profit on the sale. In fact they probably ripped you off on gap insurance, you can usually get it cheaper from your own insurance company, and while I hate to judge before all the facts are in, there's a good chance the warranty they sold you was overpriced and not all it's cracked up to be.

Up to you, buy you likely have three days legally to return it. I would tell them I was unhappy that they pushed me into it and be willing to walk away. Tell them you want the out the door price, and you will pay it, if it is good anyway. Otherwise, I would be out the door.
