should I buy petrol or diesel car

Hey Scotty, I am an Indian who lives abroad and me and my family travel to India for about 1 month in a year(before Corona). We have a 1999 Suzuki zen and it runs but it's rusted on the bottom and there aren't any seatbelts in the back so my dad was planning on buying a new car/new to us(used). Everytime I suggest him a cool SUV or car he says no because it's a diesel (most vehicles in India are diesels because of the huge tax on fuel) and says if you don't drive a diesel the car will break and that is why he only wants a petrol. We have done this on the petrol zen and it still runs and drives.

Please explain how this works if it's true.

Also now my sister is going there for college so somebody will be there to drive a car regularly so now he doesn't mind getting a diesel. I heard Isuzu vehicles are reliable, how are they? What do you think of a 2021 Isuzu d max x terrain pickup with a 3L turbocharged 4 cylinder. Are they reliable. All pickups here are and have been turbocharged 4 cylinders and people say Isuzu is quite reliable. We don't get the Hilux or any other foreign pickup in India and this pickup is the same price as the Kia seltos and Hyundai Creta in India. Which do you recommend for a family of 5 grow up kids.

Because of the high taxes on cars the difference between a new and 3 year old car in price is not that much and also we have terrible roads so my dad doesn't want to risk it with a used car.

Thank you

If you making short trip get a petrol car if you driving long trips or towing alot

Izuzu is know for good Diesel engines here in the USA. Not sure about India though. Do you have a good number of  diesel mechanics in India?

@nick20s
A lot. Here fuel cost about a dollar per litre, i.e about 70rs per litre out of which 50rs is tax. So most people buy diesels because of the cost of fuel.
Can you keep a diesel for months without running if you add fuel stabilizer and disconnect the battery? (My dad's been doing that with an old petrol Suzuki and it's it still runs.)
Also thanks for the information mate

@aidan-pereira
You're welcome! Yes, it is recommended to add fuel stabilizer made specifically for diesels and it helps prevent algae formation which thrive in water.
