Hello guys,

I'm wondering is there any regular maintenance schedule for catalytic converter cleaning. Or you need to clean it only if Engine Check light related to Cat converter appears?

I've seen lately its quite a trend here in Pakistan where people suggest to clean catalytic converter every 50k km. Or if you say fuel economy is not good, sluggish acceleration or no power, they will suggest you to clean cat converter. Thanks

No.

In the United States, no.

The US EPA (environmental protection agency) heavily regulates fuel used in the US.  For starters we have ultra low emissions requirements for gasoline and diesel fuel.

My first thought is if your fuel quality is prematurely creating issues.

I don't know about fuel standards in Pakistan, but the U.S. EPA highly regulates fuel quality and emissions. I guess it makes sense, since Americans consume 20% of the world's oil production. If you have good fuel like us, you shouldn't really need to clean the catalytic converter, as long as the engine is running close to optimum. Long term running too rich or lean can damage them. Some cars are made with shoddy converters, I believe Scotty has said Nissan makes low quality ones. In those cases, attempting to clean them could save several thousand in repairs vs buying a new one.

In my quarter century of driving and owning cars here in the US, I have never cleaned my cats.  I’ve only had to replace the cats (causing P0420 code) just once.
