How do I replace the Thermal Expansion Valve

I have come to the conclusion that the Thermal Expansion Valve on my 2009 Scion xB is sticking intermittently. I can not find any procedure on its replacement.  Am I able to replace it without removal of the heater core box and whole dash?

Looks like it's buried in there pretty good along with the evaporator temperature sensor. Here's the procedure for the latter, the expansion valve should be pretty similar to access:
