Scotty-
I have two vehicles that I am planning to have the engine coolant flushed/changed. If I don't want the dealer to do it, should I buy the OEM fluid or can I go to AutoZone/O'Reilly and buy compatible fluid? I know for the automatic transmission you recommend OEM fluid but I didn't know if you have an opinion on coolant OEM fluid.
Thanks in advance!
No
If you want to though you can get the coolant that is recommended for that sort of vehicles ie green for Nissan purple for Honda and Toyota
The cheapest will probably be the Super tech coolant from Walmart
The color is just a dye. Look up the chemistry used by your OEM coolant. Any leading brand coolant with the same chemistry would be fine.
This is the most accurate answer.
should I buy the OEM fluid
what's the difference in price? Is it worth giving a second thought to?
OEM coolant just takes the guesswork out of it. You could also use usually coolant specific to the make of your car. Check your owners manual to see compatible coolants.
There are universal coolants available, but I much prefer the color and type that matches OEM.
You could also price compare coolant from the dealer and the auto parts store. Sometimes it could be price competitive. (Look for coupons on dealer websites.)
What kind of car do you have?
Hey Kaizen, I'm looking for a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox and a 2016 Toyota Camry.
