Do I really need an engine cover?

I recently purchased a 2019 Volkswagen Golf Comfortline a couple days ago.  I went to do an oil change today and the tech told me I didn't have an engine cover on the motor.  I have found conflicting reports about whether you do or don't need one.  Most say it's just for looks and does nothing.  Is this true?  Do I need to purchase a cover or is it safe to go without one?

It's purely cosmetic.

They put it there to hide VW's shame.

You absolutely do not need it. It's a cosmetic piece to make the engine bay "look pretty".

Cars didn't even have them for a very long time.

I mean there are rare cases when you need them. like on Ford's Duratec... it prevents water from going under the valve cover (ingest happens though the coil holes)

Agreed. There are exceptions to every rule.

Scotty calls them stupid beauty covers for a reason. Haha. You don't need it. Other than Endless Money Pit, Stupid Beauty Cover is probably his most famous moniker.

Cars didn't have them until fairly recently. Subarus still don't have them last time I saw one.
