When your transmission goes out, is there are way for you to get a brand new transmission from the company that made it (the supplier) or through the car company itself? I remember Scotty saying that manufacturers don't sell new engines but what about transmissions? I know it would be expensive but is that an option or are you stuck with junkyard transmissions...?
No. The best you can get is a remanufactured OEM transmission. They save their new stuff for their new cars.
How long do the remanufactured ones last? I assume not near as long as the original one from the factory but maybe a few years?
@Kerem It depends on the mileage and the vehicle itself.
@Kerem It is hard to say as each is different. However it is usually not as long as the original one.
From what I've experienced, they don't. Auto manufacturers sell remanufactured transmissions. However, in the case of GM, for example, the warranty (3 years, 100K) is damn good, better than the standard GM warranty of 3/36 or 3/60. And the folks I've heard from say that the rebuilt GM transmissions have never given them problems.
Toyota's warranty is just 12 months, but unlimited miles. And so forth. You'd have to dig out what Ford or other manufacturers provide.
Call and ask
No, engines and transmissions are all rebuilt.
They don't sell new transmissions because most companies don't have a lot of employees to build new transmissions or engines. Plus, the companies don't want to invest any money into transmissions or engines. Just the cheaper parts like the axles and other stuff.
Some aftermarket remanufacturers offer pretty good warranties. I wish I had gone that way with my '99 Ranger instead of wasting a year and $2800 on a rebuild that took 5 shop visits to get right, and sometimes I'm still not convinced it is. It's also a basic 4-speed with reverse, which should've been straightforward vs a 6+ speed. I was looking at a remanufactured transmission that had a 3 year/ unlimited mileage warranty for an $1800 unit, only I didn't find it until after I had mine rebuilt. Definitely a wiser choice going reman vs paying for a rebuild. I've learned the lesson.
All are rebuilt. I would check out Monster Transmission or TCI, These guys offer rebuilt units with all the upgrades that are available.
