Does rich mixture improve performance

Does making an engine slightly richer add horsepower to it? Would it have negative side-effects to the engine?

I have a performance tool that allows me to reprogram the settings.

running rich isn't good for a catalytic converter.

In the case of a slightly rich mixture, there is a tendency for reduced engine efficiency and worse fuel economy, but the rich mixture will generate a little more power (nothing to get too excited about) and actually burn cooler.  However, some people report a sulpher or ‘rotten egg’ smell that is omitted from the exhaust and/or black smoke.  We’ve all been behind cars that exhibit this.

.

In any event, I would not mess with the tuner settings.  If you want to tune the engine for more power, do it right or don’t do it at all.  This usually means leaving it to a professional.

I like to think the "if you have to ask you cant afford it" logic applies here.

your car already does this when it's needed. It's called enrichment mode. Don't futz with it.

The man clearly wants Mo Powah.

well he's gonna get Mo problems too

It depends, generally yes but there are some variables. What car/ engine? What tool do you have? Do you have an AFR gauge, or access to the full fuel map?

You can damage alot depending on if you're too rich or too lean.

It's a computer controlled engine. If it's a street car, don't mess with it.
