Vehicle: 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD 4x4 (diesel engine), 172,000 miles
While driving 80mph (posted speed limit) the drive shaft came off and the rear differential is ruined. The shop said they have to replace the rear axle (they found one with 120K miles from a salvage yard).
The mechanic said the pinion nut came off. What would cause this to happen, and how do I prevent it from happening again?

Well if it had never been touched it wasn't built correctly and tightened up. Only being loose when I can come off over time

usually lack of maintenance. U-joint seizes up.

inspect & maintain the driveline regularly
