Hey Scotty,

I have a 1993 f-150 with a 5.8w hooked up to an E4od tranny. It has 234,000 miles on it and it shifts a bit hard from first to second gear and weird when not warmed up. Should i change the fluid and filter and put a quart of Lucus Stop Slip and maybe the TPS sensor or should I replace the entire trans with a factory rebuilt one? I also notice there is a little leak around the bell housing. I’m a college student and National Guard. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I have an '89 with the same motor and tranny. I notice it's pretty normal for them to not shift as well as they get older with a lot of miles. You can try to change the filter and fluid to see what that does, also low fluid can sometimes cause harsh shifting like that. And I'd check your transmission mounts too, that can be a cause too, especially on old vehicles. Lucas stop slip might work too, but I'd save that for last.

Definitely try changing the filter and fluid if it's been a while. (but keep the old fluid around, if the transmission is too worn, new fluid might make it slip a bunch.) if that doesn't do it, then I'd try those other things mentioned.
