Egr Monitor for California Smog

Good afternoon Scotty!

So I recently replaced my distributor on my 1997 Nissan GXE and had to disconnect the battery terminal. It reset the computer and monitors and now I need to get smogged for emissions.

I have driven 1500 miles since the disconnection of the battery and all monitors are completed except for the EGR monitor. I have tried drive cycle and multiple long drives. I don't know what to do at this point (also there are no codes)...

Any options??

You just need to put more miles on it. It will eventually set.

Its literally been a more then a month of driving and 1500 miles... There aren't any other plausible issues?

The only other reason it wouldn't set would be a bad component in the EGR system. If you can have one system show not ready and still pass inspection, I would go ahead and get it to the inspection station.

In California, for 1996-1999 gas vehicle, you are allowed one incomplete monitor (it can be any monitor) in order to pass the ODB Test Monitor readiness.

See here:

This is valuable info. Thanks DayWalker!

You are a lifesaver! I just called the smog place after verifying you were correct through the ca.gov website. The smog station got rude with me and said that was false. He proceeded to tell me that "I have been doing this for 20 years I think I know what I am talking about." I then called a different place and they will happily smog it because ca.gov says 1 monitor is allowed to be incomplete.

I will be filing a complaint against this smog station for making me come back over 5 times (I wasn't charged... but still). Thanks DayWalker!

@Dylan717 You are welcome. Very happy to have helped!

@DayWalker just wanted to update you! I went and passed flying colors you were right and the smog tech said "you taught me something very valuable today." Thanks again man! I served him like I had a subpoena and showed him the law! so awesome! back to driving my car for another 10 years at 200,000 miles lol

Ahhh, trying to pass the emissions test in California for a 1997 vehicle. gl to anyone dealing with that...

Living in California, what others say online about how crazy it is here is an understatement.
