Hallo Scotty I’m Kostas from Netherlands andI have a question.I have a 2006 vw passat with 200000km and it has a problematic egr valve which causes the motor lamp on.The dealership is asking me 2000€ to replace it but a mechanic advised me to disengage it.Will it cause any problems to my car if he disengage it?What is the best solution?Thank you very much.
Firstly €2000 is far, far too much. Even from a main dealer that is an outrageous amount of money..
Your EGR valve allows a small amount of exhaust gas to be recirculated through the air intake system, burning them off and reducing emissions. Cons of this include an increased carbon build up along the intake manifold and the valve itself which is what I would guess is causing it to be problematic.
The EGR valve can be removed entirely and it's existence wiped from your cars ECU, note that this may lead to your car failing an emissions test if one is required in The Netherlands.
Why not ask the mechanic who advised you to disengage it if he can replace the EGR valve with a new one? The part itself shouldn't be more than about 200€ and depending on location it can be a relatively time friendly job.
Thank you very much for your message
