Electric car ?

Scotty, why are car manufacturers and the government pushing electric cars so hard? Electric cars are far from being green. Electric power plants are the largest carbon producers on the planet. Water turbine , solar, and wind are fairly clean power but not able to meet demands. Only nuclear power is clean, but we all know how safe that is, Three mile island, Chernobyl, Fukushima, etc. US. power plants can't even keep up with current demand, brownouts, blackouts. What happens when we all plug in our cars? Plus what happens with all the used up batteries, those are toxic waste if not recycled properly and I am sure someone will dump them for profit. New gas powered cars today burn extremely efficient and produce minimal pollution compared to their recent ancestors. I wish people could be more informed before these changes are forced on us by uneducated people.

Short answer: Politicians don't make educated decisions. Their decisions are based on what they think will win them votes.

It doesn't seem to me that manufacturers are pushing it. They make a few electric cars to sell to those who want them. But their best interest is to keep making whatever people are buying. Right now that's gas guzzling SUV's.

Personal opinions ahead ...

I'm all for the development of electric cars, but I don't like government ramming it down our throats. Threatening to ban combustion engines, and setting ridiculous goals based on wishful thinking. If people want electric cars, they will buy them.

Couldn't agree any more...well said. They want to ban all sales of combustion engines by 2035 in California. Now that's just forceful...

There are political forces behind it, mainly politicians living in ivory towers that know nothing about cars or much of anything  else for that matter. However, taking some liberties (I'm not a moderator), I'd say this forum is really not the place to get into the reasons for that. For a car forum where such political discussions are welcome you might want to try:
