Hello there,
First of all I wish I could bring youvthe car but I'm on another continent.
I have a Ford Edge SEL 2013 with a little over 120k miles on the engine.
I used a simple OBD scanner but no codes show up. I did notice the LTFT is higher on bank 1 especially while idling with the hesitation and slight rpm drop. As well as a slight decrease in fuel economy.
I had the spark plugs changed less than a year ago with its OEM replacement.
My local mechanic without any scanning tools, insists on changing all spark plugs and all coils as well as cleaning the injectors, and I feel thats too much fuss.
I feel maybe one plug or coil has gone bad, and maybe i can test the coil with a multimeter.
What do you think?
Thank you everyone
I got the injector rail out and tested each injector to examine the spray and it was the cyl 2 injector spraying weakly and with a delay.
Now the LTFT on both sides are balanced and the misfire is gone 🙂
Good job!
Clean or replace the injectors. How 'bout changing your fuel filter?
The 02 sensor readings might be a cause, or they might well be a symptom. As a cause, the electrical connections to the sensor (and heater) might be bad, or the sensors themselves might be bad. As an effect, and as I understand it, the LTFT is in the positive. The control module is adding fuel, so the Edge has been running lean. You could smoke test the vehicle, looking for any and all vacuum leaks. Even a tiny pinpoint hole between the engine and the exhaust pipes would bring in unmetered air, and the engine would run lean.
Likewise, Doc's suggestion is good. Check the injectors. An injector that is dripping gas, rather than spraying it, will throw the control module off. (An injector head that is leaking will look cleaner than injectors that are working properly).
And there's always cleaning the throttle body and the MAF sensor. If the MAF sensor is dirty, i will mismeasure the air flowing into the engine. Scotty has a video "How to Make Your Engine Run Better with Some Spray Cleaner.") On most vehicles, like my 08 Camry, it's easy and relatively quick to clean the Mass Air Flow sensor and the Throttle Body.
You don't need a mechanic to clean these two items, and the two cans of spray are relatively cheap, at least here in the U.S.
Excellent information here from geriscan.
Geriscan thank you for insight.
Doc I will take them out and test them outside the engine.
I hope its the cylinder 2 injector thats causing the mild misfire behind this mess. Oxygen sensors are too costly for trial and error. Especially the motorcraft ones as suggested by Scotty in his videos.
Well you can't really test them that accurately unless you ever freeze frame digital storage oscilloscope. But if you have good scan tool and you see that one particular cylinder isn't working swap that coil with another one and if the problem moves so that other silindile know that's the problem that's how I diagnose him
Thank you, I did that and turns out the coils were fine. I also measured their resistance and compared it with a new one and seems they were all fine.
So i cleaned the intake manifold and changed the spark plugs. Now the hesitation is gone.
I'm left now with another problem.
Bank 1 LTFT is almost always double the value of Bank 2.
Where would I start troubleshooting this one?
They are never going to be quite equal, because of how the computer is continually juggling the averaging. The more specific question is this: Double of what? If it were 4 percent to 8 percent, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it were 10 percent to 20 percent, that's a different story. How's the Mode 6 data, generally? Everything "green?"
Thanks for the reassurance
Bank 1 LTFT ~15%
Bank 2 LTFT <5%
I got red in mode 6 with fordsys lite for
O2 sensor B1S2
O2 sensor B2S2
O2 heater B2S2
What, exactly, do you mean by "cleaned the intake manifold?"
All the parts between the air filter and the engine get sprayed clean with carb cleaner.
Thanks for your help everyone. After a long time and by coincidence after changing the purge valve on the intake the LTFT is now equal on both banks and better fuel economy.
