Engine oil of Toyota Camry in Hot weather

Topic starter

I have a toyota camry 2014 which requires 0w-20 motor oil according to manual. I live in qatar where the temperature during summer is around 45-50 degree Celsius. Thats why my mechanic used 20w-50 oil because according to him 0w-20 is not good hot weather. Was he right? Will my engine be okay using 20w-50 oil intead of recommended oil?

NO. your manual clearly states what oil should be used at what temp, this may ruin your engine.

I live in a different part of the mid-east with temps around 35C all the time, have used the recommended spec and had 0 issues with it.

Just adding that regardless of where you live, your engine operates in the 70-90 degree range.
Oil is rated in the XX W- YY format: XX stands for the viscosity at -18C, YY for viscosity at 98C.
Changing the YY weight makes no sense - XX is often changed based on the requirements in your MANUAL.
Anyhow, if he insists that 20W-50 is the only oil it takes - he is both incompetent and confident, which are the worst type of mechanics.

Hopefully, your mechanic takes care of the engine repair bill.
