I have an Impala SS (1996) that has two pulleys on the crankshaft. The one that is aligned with the pulleys on the A/C compressor, alternator, etc., is about 2 inches smaller in diameter than the larger one. The drive belt is on the smaller pulley and the larger pulley is not to be used.
Here are my questions. Does using a smaller pulley on the crankshaft spin the other pulleys (A/C compressor, etc.) faster or slower than if the larger crankshaft pulley had the belt on it? Would using the smaller or larger pulley be better on performance or component longevity?
thank you
David
How do you propose to line up the other pulley with existing accessories it doesn't line up with? Why would you want to? The larger the crankshaft pulley, the faster it will spin the accessories, all else being equal.
Would using the smaller or larger pulley be better on performance
No. You car has been engineered to balance everything.
