My 2006 Honda civic 1.8L shudders at idle when the AC compressor either turns on or off, rarely in between. System has no leaks, blows cold (once you get going). Is this normal for a tiny little engine with the AC on? It's only rated for 140 hp.

I don't know of any car where that would be considered normal. The compressor could be loose on its mount, the belt could be worn and flopping around, or the compressor could be wearing out and taking more power than usual to operate. Also check your engine and transmission mounts. If those are bad minor vibrations can be amplified.
