my neighbor is selling his 2000 Toyota Corolla for $500 because the "engine threw a rod and blew a hole in engine block."  What does this mean?

It means you'll need a new engine but there are plenty of engines and junk yards do not attempt to fix the one there it's got too much damage

What Scotty says, so unless you want to buy a long block engine from a place called Japanese Exchange, they import low milage engines from Japan or take the junk yard gamble. I would not purchase this project unless you a lot of stress and Toyota parts laying around the garage.

If your neighbor did maintain his Toyota to point he blew a hole in the block, the rest of the car will most likely need more expensive work as well.
