2005 VW Passat with 152k miles on it. Lately feels like the car doesn't have the power it "should" and if I try to floor it a bit, both the EPC and ASR/ESP (the triangle inside the circle) lights come on and power becomes very limited. Not sure what can be causing this and not sure where to start.

A full diagnostic scan for codes and data would be a good place to start. Seeing as how that thing is nearly 20 years old you could also check the obvious things like air and fuel filters, fuel pressure, spark plugs, and check for excessive back pressure due to a clogged catalytic converter.
