2002 F150 fuel pump preventative replacement?

Topic starter

2002 F150 Automatic 2WD Supercab 4.6L V8 257,000 miles.  Has never had fuel pump changed.  Would it be a good idea to replace before it fails?  Only possible symptom I notice is the fuel gauge is sometimes slightly erratic. Thanks

What the heck if you plan on keeping it for years go ahead put a new sending unit and fuel pump in

I would leave it. Some of them can go for ever.

Change it. It's past due.

Spectra fuel pump guaranteed for life. AutoZone $100+

Motorcraft original equipment replacement $320+..."designed" for 10 years/150,000 miles.

New strainer on pump and clean debris from tank.

New fuel filter.

Gasket for fuel tank opening.

Gauge issue is probably the gauge itself. Although it could be the sending unit on the pump or wiring also.

Fuel line disconnect tool. Blow out debris from connections and soak with penetrating oil. Tool has to be fully seated in connection or it won't unlock...push, twist, pull until it unlocks.
