F150 intermittent start issue

Topic starter

I have a 2002 F150 that belonged to my dad and it doesn’t always start as soon as the key is turned on. Sometimes I have to try three times before it starts. Sometimes it starts right up. I have changed the plugs, plug wires, coil pack, fuel filter and run premium gas with no difference in starting. Fuel rail pressure was also checked. It runs great but fails to start the first time often. It is the six cylinder with auto trans, 75000 miles. Thanks for any replies and welcome to Tennessee as I am next to you in NC!

  • Does it crank every time or not? If not, the starter might be going out. If yes, try another key(if you have a spare).

@yaser
Yes always starts but does not “hit” each time. Starter is fine, turns over fine, just doesn’t fire up on first attempt much. Takes two or three attempts. Tried the spare key too. No difference...

Did you pressure test the fuel pump?

@yaser
I had the fuel rail pressure tested. I have noticed the gas cap has no pressure when unscrewing to fuel up. Could it be something as simple as the gas cap not making good seal?

It is unlikely that the gas cap is the reason but since it is cheap, change it.

@yaser
Ok will do. Thanks!
