Hello, 1999 4runner v6 automatic. On cold start there is a metallic squeaking noise that normally goes away once the engine is heated up. I have no overheating issues. It is not the serpentine belts. The fan is very hard to spin and if I try to spin it hard by hand I can spin it but it has a lot of resistance and won't spin on it's own whatsoever. It does spin fine when the car is running. Do you think this is bad or normal? I heard it could also be water pump making the noise. Not losing any coolant.
When you take off the serpentine belt (on a cold engine), turning various accessories and the tensioner by hand should identify any looseness or noise. Could be the water pump, fan, alternator, power steering pump, AC, etc. I would do this sooner rather than later, as one of those going out could be very inconvenient.
That's a tough one - you can get a mechanics stethoscope for $10 at Harbor Freight or Amazon. That would help you locate the sound better.
