Toyota Corolla/Matrix/Pontiac Vibe, Honda Civic or Fit, or a 2004-06 Camry.
You'll see these in the FAQs but here's a few excerpts (with some embellishments):
1. Take it for a thorough test drive, all the gears, and pay attention to what you feel and hear.
2. Make sure everything works: Doors, windows, HVAC, radio, cruise control, wipers, headlights, turn signals, trunk latch, remote fob, etc.
3. If you can, get the maintenance history to determine whether the vehicle was properly maintained.
4. Have a mechanic do a thorough pre-purchase inspection. (Visual inspection plus detailed OBD/Enhanced Diagnostics/Live Data scan. If the seller will not allow it, walk away).
5. Don't get emotionally attached to a particular vehicle. It's a business decision, a cost/benefit analysis. See the vehicle as if it were a potential purchase for someone else.
6. Pay attention to the potential financing. Dealers and lenders make far more money on horrible financial setups, for the buyer, than they do on the sale of the vehicle. THOSE DETAILS MATTER.
7. Everybody lies in the car sales business. Take nothing at face value.
Good luck, but, as always, caveat emptor.

For 5 grand, I would recommend 2003-2013 Toyota Corolla 1.8, 2009-2011 Honda Civic, 2009-2013 Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe 1.8, highly recommend the 2004-2006 Camry.
