First truck advice

Hello. I'm 16, and thinking about buying a first truck. I was wondering, would I be better off with a 2001 to 2004 series Toyota Tacoma, or a older ford or chevy? I am in the rust belt, I have a decent amount of experience with wrenching, I have people who can help me, I hate electronics with a passion, and I want something reliable, safe, cheap enough, and I easy to work on.

An old Tacoma could be good as long as you are willing and able to deal with age-related problems, but beware of frame rust problems on those trucks. Check out the photos in this Tacoma forum:

Be sure to have any candidate vehicle inspected by a good mechanic before purchase.

oh so just a holy grail. You can have cheap OR reliable. Anything that old will be a fixer upper. Cheap at the outset, but a money pit to get into reliable condition.
