I am wondering how reliable the 2013-2018 Ford 3.5 Duratec V6 is. I am aware the water pump is internal, so please don't mention it because I plan on replacing it if I ever buy one. None of Scotty's videos mention this engine, only him trash-talking EcoBoost.
That engine is the opposite of reliable. A lawsuit was brought against Ford for it.
So you're going to have the engine partially removed for thousands of dollars just to change the water pump? And what about the next time the water pump fails? They leak into the crankcase without warning and destroy the whole engine. You're crazy.
The cam phasers are also prone to failing. Repairing those can easily set you back more than the value of the vehicle.
Scotty (and Car Wizard) have both talked about that engine and say to avoid it. Realize replacing the water pump is already a partial engine out job and will run you $1,000-$2,000.
The Duratec naturally aspirated engines are better than the Ecoboosts. They can last some time with proper care and maintenance.
