Ford Escape Transmission

I have a 2007 Ford Escape, XLT, 4 cyl automatic with 139,467 and I’ve noticed over the past year the transmission will kick and clunk some days then some days shift smooth as ever. There’s never any consistency or rhyme or reason as to why, just some days it’s clunking and kicking and some days it’s smooth. What could that be?

Is the fluid level OK?

Fluid level is good, I check it weekly. Had it serviced at 121,000 miles by a transmission shop of a good friend but it’s kicking harder than when I originally took it in

When was the last time you change the ATF? It the fluid level and condition are good, I would have a pro check the transmission. These cars have tendency to fail transmission around 120k miles.

Had it serviced at about 121,000 miles. They flushed it and put an additive in, which at the time made me weary thinking it would make things worse but I didn’t start feeling it clunk hard until now (139K), and I forgot to mention before, without fail after a cold start up there’s a hard clunk when I first put it in reverse.

Odds are that the flushing shot the transmission and the additive they put held it. Add some Lucas transmission additive to see if it helps.
